The Belfry is a leading golf resort, and meetings and conference hotel. Katie Niland is the sales director, helping to develop the hotel into a world class venue in the royal Sutton Coldfield area.
How she started in the industry:
With just under 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Katie’s passion for her work is an inspiration for all women to be bold, collaborative, and accountable. She spoke about her work with passion, enthusiasm, and excitement for women in the industry.
Katie started as an entry level sales coordinator and worked her way up within the industry to become a successful boutique hotelier, having held positions at some of the industry’s most recognised names such as the Hilton, Marriott, Malmaison, and Village hotels. She joined the Belfry in 2014 as the sales director and clearly loves it. “I thrive on it, I’ve found home”.
Challenges she faces in the industry:
One of the main challenges facing the industry, Katie believes, is recruitment. She said: “We need to work hard to showcase the value of events for further investment in the industry and therefore recruit and develop that next generation of talent and to reinvest.”
ESG is another challenge facing the hotel sector. It’s always something that needs to be thought about, especially when it comes to ensuring the needs of the clients are met. However, Katie believes that there is something that can be done about it. “We need some good role models out there championing what this industry can do and I’m so passionate about that.”
On her leadership style:
Katie refuses to adapt her leadership style when in rooms with male leaders. “It’s them that have to adapt, my refusal to adapt is what has got me to where I am now. It’s not a reflection of who I am but a reflection of who they are, regardless of gender or title and that’s what I expect from my team, you’re defined by your achievement not your title or your gender.”
Advice to young women:
When asked about some advice she would give to young women who are entering the industry, she said: “Let your results speak for themselves. Be accountable, be bold, work hard and you’ll be recognised.” And if you are fearful to do something, Katie says: “Use the fear to fire you up!” Adding: “Be defined by your achievements, find a role model, someone who will champion you, work hard and you will be recognised in this industry.”
A woman that has inspired you:
A woman that has inspired Katie on her professional journey, was a sales director who supported her within the industry in the early stages. “I looked up to her on how she handled herself, how she approached the role, she didn’t compromise on anything, she was the role, not the woman in the role.”
