The events sector is well known for being a predominantly female industry, however there is still a preference for men in senior positions. The Annual Event Industry Salary Survey revealed that 46% of the men answering are paid more than £65,000, compared to only 19% of women.  The underlying cause – a lack of negotiation skills!

A huge pool of talent is not being selected due to one skill so let’s change the curve and remember to ‘sell’ ourselves, as well as our events:

  1. Know your worth

L’oreal coined the phrase ‘because i’m worth it’ for a reason, uniting women around the world, encouraging them to fearlessly embrace their ambitions and believe in their self-worth every day (making them a lot of money in the process).  So what do you bring to the table? List out your skills and recognise what value they bring to the company? What impact have you made on the people around you, both in terms of productivity and profitability? Numbers speak, so look at your results.

  1. Recommendations

We’re taught not to brag so if you are struggling with the above, ask for recommendations on Linkedin and let others do the talking for you! This is a fantastic way to showcase your skills, while also bringing positive recognition to your company too – no employer can argue with that!

  1. Build your network

They say it takes a village to raise a family, but that is also true for your career! Confide in mentors and trusted leaders, taking advice on how you can gain recognition and request a salary that is befitting on your experience and value to your organisation.  Join other networking groups outside of your company and share best practices, this will only strengthen your knowledge but also your support network.

  1. Learn from others including Lewes FC – the first football club in the world to pay their female and male football players equally!

Maggie Murphy, CEO, Lewes FC –  will be leading the squad at the National Sales Conference, as we tackle gender and equality, while giving you the tools to ensure you do as well as your company does. She’ll be joined by Zena Everett, who’ll be ensuring you go from ‘crazy busy’ to focused and efficient in no time at all, as well a star studded line up of keynote and industry experts covering sales and leadership.

  1. Take Action…

Step outside your comfort zone and fulfill your true potential by attending the UK’s leading professional development event for Revenue Leaders, Account Managers, Sales & Customer Success Teams on 23 November in Birmingham
