The Vienna Convention Bureau (VCB has announced the appointment of Christian Woronka (pictured) to the role of director, succeeding Christian Mutschlechner.

Mutslechner served for 34 years in the role, but is retiring in February. Woronka previously held the role of director with Cologne Convention Bureau, and was selected as the most suitable candidate from an international recruitment process.

From 2019, Woronka will be responsible for management and consolidation of the Convention Bureau and Market Management departments, as well as overseeing the expansion of conventions, corporate meetings and incentives.

Woronka studied geography with a focus on tourism. He has been working for the Cologne Convention Bureau since 2008 and has been its director since 2012.

He commented: “A top priority for me was forging the link between Cologne as a congress location and topics in science and business. Together with my city partners, I succeeded in this endeavour – for example, with the acquisition of the World Pathology Congress and the Planetary Congress.”

Vienna Tourist Board’s CEO Norbert Kettner said: “I would like to extend a warm welcome to Vienna towards Christian Woronka!

“He will continue the successful work of his predecessor, maintain Vienna’s position as an international leader among congress metropolises, and place new emphasis on corporate meetings and digitization of the customer’s experience as our conference and congress guest.”
