The University of Leicester’s £17.5m College Court Conference Centre will be opened today (1 October) by the University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Robert Burgess.

The development has transformed the Grade II listed College Hall Buildings on Knighton Road, which has been out of use for eight years, into a 160-capacity conference venue.

The new conference centre has 18 conference rooms, 123 ensuite bedrooms, restaurant, bar, private dining room and garden lounge. It has announced bookings up until June 2016.

During the opening ceremony Burgess and Steve Crawford, the centre’s Director will bury a time capsule of objects and treasures recovered from the former halls of resident during the building’s redevelopment. The capsule will be buried for 50 years with a plaque bearing instructions for it to be re-opened in 2063.

I am delighted to be able to open our new conference centre, which is something that I have been keen on developing at the University for a number of years,” says Burgess.”It will bring new people to the University and the city which will help the local economy and create over 50 new jobs.”

Charlotte Sanders, Business Development Manager, adds: “College Court has raised Leicester’s profile in the event industry with many bookings new to the city.

“With our facilities and plans for future growth, and with bookings in the diary until June 2016, we are confident that our business will grow year on year and welcome some major corporate businesses from all over the UK.”
