The UK falls out of UIA’s International Meeting Statistics top 10

The UK has fallen out of the 2011 International Meeting Statistics report from the Union of International Associations (UIA) top 10 country rankings. In the 2010 report, the UK had moved into the top 10 with a ninth place ranking.
 
The report has found Singapore rise to the top position from third in the 2011 country rankings. Singapore replaced the US, who fell to second place and Japan moving from second to third place.
 
Australia moved up to claim the 10th position while Spain fell from sixth to ninth position. Korea moved two places to sixth position.
 
In terms of the city rankings, the first five cities stayed in their ranks with Singapore leading with 8.9 per cent of all qualifying meetings held. Budapest joined the top 10 and Madrid fell out of the top 10 rankings.
 
The statistics are based on information systematically collected by the UIA Congress Department and selected according to strict criteria maintained over the years. Meetings taken into consideration include those organised and/or sponsored by the international organisations which appear in the Yearbook of International Organizations and in the International Congress Calendar.
 
Not included are purely national meetings as well as those of an exclusively religious, didactic, political, commercial, or sporting nature, and corporate and incentive meetings, the survey of these specific markets not being within the scope of activities of the UIA.
 
The total number of meetings in the UIA database are 377,055.
