A DLR strike that threatened to cause transport chaos for the 2018 Marathon and some major events at Excel London was called off at the 11th hour after the RMT union confirmed “significant progress” had been made in talks.

The four-day strike had been set to begin at 4am on Friday April 20 and last until 4am on Tuesday April 24.

A normal DLR service will now run over the weekend.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “After 13 days of intensive talks…progress has been enough to enable our executive to suspend the action and further discussions will now take place moving forwards with the union remaining vigilant as ever and we remain in dispute.”

Talks had previously been held at the conciliation service Acas but ended without agreement.

Mark Davis, interim general manager of the DLR, said: “For the thousands of runners raising millions of pounds for charity this weekend, we are delighted that the planned industrial action on the DLR has been suspended.

“Our services will help all those participating and supporting the London Marathon travel across London for this fantastic event.”

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced that the planned action had been called off at 18:22 BST on Thursday 19 April.
