Lizz Truss has today (20 September) resigned, making her the shortest-serving PM in UK history. Truss was elected in September and has acted as PM for a total of 45 days.

Commenting on her resignation she said: “I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability. Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills, Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine threatens the security of our whole continent and our country has been held back for too long by low economic growth.

“I was elected by the Conversative Party with a mandate to change this. We delivered on energy bills and on cutting national insurance. We set out a vision for a low tax, high growth economy that would take advantage of the freedoms of Brexit.”

She added: “I recognise though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”

Truss’ resignation follows disagreements with Tory MPs, who have encouraged her to step down after not following through with her economic policies.

Whilst in power, Truss appointed Lord Syed Kamal as the UK’s new tourism minister. He is set to attend the Business of Events’ Forum, taking place on 2 November at the QEII Centre.

The next PM will be in place by 31 October, according to Sir Graham Brady.

Update: 24 October, 2:31pm

Sir Graham Brady has confirmed Rishi Sunak will be the next UK PM. The UK has now had a total of three PM in less than two months.

The news is a result of Penny Mordaunt, the only other running candidate, removing herself from the race.
