Many events are being held in Glasgow, 23 July, as the city marks a year to the day until the starting gun is fired for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Olympic Gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy hosted a breakfast of champions and Team Scotland athletes joined Sir Chris for the launch of the official ticketing guide to the Games.
The 11-day event will be spread across 14 venues. It will be the biggest sporting and cultural festival Scotland has ever hosted.
Chairman of Glasgow 2014, Lord Smith of Kelvin, said the organising committee had made “great strides” towards the goal of delivering an outstanding event.
The main venues have been built and are open to the public, he added.
Organisers have also received over 50,000 applications from people wishing to be Games volunteers.
The Glasgow team has put upgrading transport as a priority, with improvements to train stations and increased services planned. Public transport will be included in the ticket prices, organisers say.
The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) campus will form the largest venue precinct of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. CN asked SECC’s Director of Sales, Ben Goedegebuure, about the feeling in the city one year out from the main event: “From a venue point of view we’re delighted to represent some of the key icons of the city, with the Clyde Auditorium and The SSE Hydro both providing a stunning backdrop to the city. The exposure will be great, but the Games also represents a chance to show how Glasgow comes together to accommodate major international events.
“From our point of view we want to make sure we send a message to all of our customers that they share a common link to the games and to give them the chance to come back to Glasgow and enjoy the Games, but to also be hosting their events in a host city for the Commonwealth Games.”
