The Network of Women in Events (NOWIE) has launched an annual report aimed at better understanding the challenges faced by women in the events industry, revealing the findings from the ‘Big Survey’.

Established in 2013 and recently transitioned to a community interest company, NOWIE exists to create better opportunities for women at all stages of their careers in events – through community, mentorship, networking and advocacy.

Women from all areas of the events sector were invited to complete the survey anonymously.

Respondents were asked to share their workplace experiences, covering topics ranging from experiences of workplace harassment to childcare and maternity, pay, career opportunities and more.

The survey’s findings shed light on the following:

→ 83% of survey respondents identified as white – suggesting a distinct lack of diversity within the female workforce in events

→ 3 in 4 women have experienced or witnessed gender-based discrimination in their workplace – with 10% of women experiencing sexual assault whilst onsite.

→ Only 8% of respondents were in director-level roles

→ 57% of respondents feel their income does not fairly reflect their work

→ Work/Life balance (25%) and Gender bias (24%) were reported as the number one challenge for women working in events.

NOWIE director, Cat Kevern said: “We created the Big Survey to give us, and others, the hard data we need to take action. It’s clear from the findings that there is still a long way to go before women in events are truly able to thrive.”

The team at NOWIE extend their thanks to everyone who has been involved in the delivery of this project, in particular the Events Industry Forum (EIF) and The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) for their generous sponsorship, and all those who take the time to contribute their answers and insights.
