European-headquartered hotel group, NH Hoteles has announced energy savings of 22.7 per cent: water usage down by 27.6 per cent: carbon emissions slashed by 40 per cent and waste and waste generation reduction and recycling by 34.2 per cent.

The company, which operates 400 hotels with 60,000 rooms in 26 countries across Europe, the US and ica, says it has “smashed” its four-year environmental targets set in its 2008-12 Strategic Environmental Plan.

Additionally, the international Group has received two industry awards this year, the IMEX and GMIC Green Supplier Award Gold Category and the 2013 Project Icarus Sustainability Gold Medal.

Since the plan’s launch, the group has spent over €4m (US$5.3m) financing environmental initiatives, of which 60 per cent has gone to making its hotels more efficient.

“Not only have we achieved our ambitious targets all today, but have done so well ahead of schedule,” says the Commercial Director for Global Sales Force NH Hoteles, Juliet Howie. “This would not have been possible without the contribution of the employees at all of our hotels who, thanks to ongoing training in this field, have proven capable of adapting to change and making this company a sustainability benchmark in the tourism sector.”

Enhanced energy efficiency across NH Hoteles’ establishments have been instrumental in the group becoming the first hotel chain in the world to achieve ISO 50001 certification, the international Energy Management Systems standard.
