London-based National Theatre’s event space The Deck has secured permission from Lambeth Council for another five years of trading.

Originally granted planning permission for five years, the council has now extended the terms of business for The Deck, allowing it to continue operating until March 2017.

In 2006 the theatre commissioned a review of public spaces around the National Theatre and how they might be used more creatively with The Deck created as a result of this.

“The Deck may only be a small structural addition to the National Theatre at 200sqms, but it has made a massive financial contribution to our business model,” says Head of Sales and Hospitality Events at The Deck, Kat Parker. “The extension of The Deck’s planning permission for another five years will give us the opportunity to further develop the venue side of the business and capitalise on event organisers’ interest in using and being associated with such an iconic brand as the National Theatre.”

The Deck, a 200sqm glowing box structure, brings together the creative work of architect Pascal Madoc-Jones, civil engineers Flint & Neill and stage engineers Delstar Engineering.

Originally fabricated off-site, The Deck was assembled using hydraulic lifts and the expertise of the National Theatre set building team.
