Culture secretary Nadine Dorries has said she will step down when Liz Truss becomes prime minister today.

According to the BBC Dorries was asked to stay on but wants to return to writing books.

Dorries yesterday tweeted her congratulations to the incoming prime minister and supported Truss throughout the leadership campaign.

Dorries has lead the Department for Culture Media and Sport since 2021. Penny Mordaunt has been linked to role ahead of cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday.

It is also understood that Dorries, who was an ardent supporter of Boris Johnson, could receive a peerage in the outgoing PM’s resignation honours list.

Before joining the cabinet, Dorries wrote a series of novels including the best-selling Four Streets based on her experience of growing up in Liverpool.

Dorries had previously been involved in selecting Bradford as the UK City fo Culture earlier in 2022 and also called for Russian participation in events to be banned in the wake of the war in Ukraine.
