An event designed to help meetings and events businesses improve the mental wellbeing of their employees and cultivate a more compassionate workplace culture is being held by the Meetings Industry Association (mia) next week.
The free event – Cultivating compassion in the workplace; an effective tool with big benefits – will take place on 20 November at BMA House in London, where experts will give advice on improving understanding of mental health issues in the workplace and reveal findings from the trade association’s study on the subject.
Earlier this year the mia launched a campaign in partnership with leadership and organisational development expert Roffey Park Institute to raise awareness of mental health, compassion and resilience in the meetings and events sector.
While many understand that working long and anti-social hours in a high-pressure environment can take its toll on mental wellbeing, individuals can find it hard to speak out on the subject and employers are not always equipped to support them.
At the 20 November event Michael Jenkins, chief executive of Roffey Park Institute, will present the findings drawn from focus group research and the results of an online survey.
Attendees will then be able to take part in a workshop on emotional intelligence with Tracey Powiesnik from Core Process, who will show how understanding your own and others’ motivations and strengths can help with staff retention.
Chief executive of the mia Jane Longhurst said: “Together with the Roffey Park Institute, we have gathered some interesting findings from our study into mental health and compassion in the workplace and we are looking forward to sharing it with those attending our event before revealing it to the wider industry.
