As London comes under Brexit pressure to retain confidence in it as Europe’s pre-eminent financial centre, the capital is set to make a major business events marketing effort at ibtm world in Barcelona later this month.

The city has positive data to draw on: Cvent ranked London as the most popular destination for meetings and incentives in Europe, in its 2016 Top 25 meetings destinations EMEA survey.

Barbara Jamison, head of business development at London & Partners, said: “Whether it’s corporate, association or incentive events, the UK offers something for everyone thanks to its diversity. In London, our heritage and world-class culture, alongside the city’s fantastic connectivity, venues, hotels and business expertise make it the ideal place to host events. We look forward to exhibiting at ibtm world with our 23 fantastic partners and to work with them to show that London, and the UK, is open.”

On the potential effects on the show of the Catalan independence issue, Jamison added: “We have been in touch regularly with the ibtm team throughout the events that have taken place in Barcelona and have been kept updated. The situation has had no impact on our plans, or that of our exhibiting partners, and we very much looking forward to taking part in the show once again.”

Kerry Prince, portfolio director, ibtm events, said: “The UK is a real draw for planners attending our flagship event in Barcelona, thanks to our strong and varied offer and the business opportunities available here.”

Asked about any effects on the show of the political turbulence in Catalonia, Prince told CN: “We are of course monitoring the current situation in Spain, but ibtm world will go ahead as planned. We will continue to work closely with the venue, local and national authorities to identify any potential risks of disruption and assess these to develop any plans necessary to ensure a safe and successful show. We are all very much looking forward to welcoming everyone to Barcelona for our 30th anniversary event.”

Prince also predicted a high profile of hosted buyers attending this year, including from Volvo, L’Oréal, Microsoft, Gucci and Shell.

A programme of networking events at this year’s show includes an 80s themed Welcome Party as a nod to the event‘s 30-year anniversary, Networking Hour, where exhibitors offer show-stopping cultural performances, and MPI Rendezvous, which will be held at the beach front Opium nightclub.

ibtm world’s Knowledge Programme is headlined by former director general of the UK Secret Service, Dame Stella Rimington. The show will also showcase an Innovation Zone and Technology and Services Zone.

ibtm world takes place, 28–30 November 2017 at Fira Gran Via Barcelona.
