Research published by City Hall has shown London is the world leader when it comes to hosting sporting events. The report found sport events contributed £230m to London’s economy in 2024.
City Hall’s report concentrated on five major sporting events in London in 2024:
- Formula E London E-Prix at Excel London
- Jacksonville Jaguars NFL game at Wembley Stadium
- Two NFL games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
- New York Mets vs Philadelphia Phillies at the London Stadium (MLB)
- UEFA Champions League Final at Wembley Stadium between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund
These events attracted around 500,000 fans and 200m viewers from around the world. This is partly thanks to the popularity of NLF – NLF in London attracted a viewership of 200m in 2024 while gathered a total of £600m in spectator spend since 2007.
To add, a poll from YouGov found 62% of Londoners feel proud when a major sporting event is hosted in the city.
Sir Sadiq Khan commented: “London is the sporting capital of the world and I am proud that we have such a strong track record of staging the biggest and best international events in our great city.”
