Liverpool Convention Bureau has announced that the city expects to welcome more than 1,500 surgical oncologists for the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) conference in 2014.

It will be the first time in its 30-year history that ESSO has held its annual congress in the UK and also the first time it has invited delegates from worldwide sister associations from the US, Brazil, India and China.

ESSO represents more than 20,000 cancer surgeons from across Europe and the Middle East. The conference, which will take place from 29-31 October 2014, will include a special Lord Mayor’s reception for delegates, will be hosted at ACC Liverpool and is expected to generate £2m in economic benefit for the city.

Professor Graeme Poston, Consultant Liver Surgeon at Aintree University Hospital and Liverpool Conference Ambassador, helped secure the event alongside Liverpool Convention Bureau and ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre.

Professor Poston, who is also President of ESSO, said: “Our success with ESSO is the latest in a series of major clinical conference wins for Liverpool against both international and national competition. Liverpool City Region’s clinicians work very closely with Liverpool Convention Bureau and venue management teams to present the best possible bids for securing major conferences in the city. Liverpool’s growing track record for successfully delivering first class clinical conferences is increasingly giving us an advantage, alongside the city’s worldwide recognition in music and football, as our brand is a global one”.

Kate Currie, Interim Convention Bureau Manager at Liverpool Convention Bureau, added: “This conference win is a great coup for the city and a reward for our collaborative efforts in securing the event. We faced competition from Athens, Geneva and Berlin, so we are extremely proud to have secured such ahigh profile conference, which underlines our city’s international reach and expert knowledge”.

Kerrin Macphie, Director of Sales at ACC Liverpool, added: “This is a first for the UK, the city and for ACC Liverpool and is testament to the great work carried out by our Ambassadors to bring high profile conferences to the city. We look forward to welcoming ESSO in 2014”.

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “I’m delighted such a prestigious, inaugural event is to be hosted in Liverpool. Liverpool was home to the country’s first medical health officer, Dr William Duncan, in the mid-19th century and the city pioneered the smoke free movement which led to the ban on smoking in public work places in 2007, so it is fitting that the region has been selected to welcome some of the world’s leading health practitioners”.
