Liverpool has confirmed that Brian Barwick will lead the bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after Durban withdrew in March. This is alongside the bid the 2026 Games.
Liverpool City Council recently granted planning permission for a new football stadium for Everton FC at Bramley Moore Dock Everton’s and it’s been suggested that this may form part of a wider complex.
According to the BBC, £500,000 has been set aside for the bid as the bidding team start a six-month bidding process.
Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson said in a statement: “The Commonwealth Games has the potential to be a game changer in further driving forward the city’s regeneration and renaissance.”
London and Birmingham have expressed interest in staging the event, while Manchester, which hosted the games in 2002, has said it would be “ready to help,” reports the BBC.
John Moore, strategic relationship manager for sport at The ACC Liverpool Group told CN: “We are pleased to be part of Team Liverpool, led by Brian Barwick, in our bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and will be one of the host venues.
“Not only does the city have strong sporting credentials, it has a track record in staging spectacular events so we have no doubt the Commonwealth Games would be a great success in Liverpool. It would provide an economic boost to the region and showcase our events on a national and international scale.”
