As thousands of A-level students received their results this week, events management is moving up the agenda as a course of choice, with the University of Greenwich in London one of many academic institutions reporting more applicants and acceptances than a year ago.
Ray Powell, Admissions Tutor at Greenwich, told CN: “We are seeing superb applications for our BA Events Management degree, and we have every expectation that the course will be full this year.
“Due to high demand for places on that course, we are able to ask for a higher number of UCAS points this year, compared with 2012-13: an average of 314 points for entry to BA Events Management.”
Robust numbers of applications over the past 12 months, Powell noted, meant clearing did not have a major impact on the department’s recruitment, with just “a handful” of clearing applications.
“We have more applicants and acceptances than last year, very much on the up. We are also seeing more of our students going into jobs in venues, so this coming year, for the first time, we will offer a new course called Events Venue Management,” Powell added.
The new course will be run by Nick Wilde (a specialist in sports venues and stadia), with Rob Davidson leading on convention centres and other business events venues.
Stuart Harper, Head of Student Admissions at Leeds Metropolitan University, told CN the clearing process could still link potential students up with events management course places at the faculty.
“There are always places available for exceptional candidates,” he said.
Helen Welburn, Head of Communications at Leeds Met added: “We do have places on our events management courses through clearing, as they are popular courses, although we don’t have a picture on numbers at the present time.”
In 2012, over 100,000 students entered clearing.
Each year some applicants pass their exams with better results than expected and UCAS also has a scheme called ‘Adjustment’ whereby students can move up to courses demanding higher point scores, including events management.
