Leeds recently unveiled a £35m six-year cultural programme, which the city conference bureau says will lead up to a year-long celebration of the city’s diverse culture in 2023.

The announcement builds on the momentum created by the Leeds 2023 bid for European Capital of Culture.

City leaders say they are keen to create a legacy across the city and retain a strong international focus to celebrate its diverse communities, adding to a rich heritage.

Leeds is a top 10 conferencing city, according to the 2017 British Meetings and Events Industry survey (BMEIS), and home to a wealth of cultural attractions that delegates can enjoy when visiting. Visitor experiences include the only remaining gas lit cinema in the UK, Hyde Park Picture House, and the world’s first ever commercial railway, Middleton Railway.

Known for its healthcare innovation and facilities, the first UK kidney dialysis treatment happened at Leeds General Infirmary, as well as the first successfully reconstructed heart with a single ventricle. Most recently the UK’s first double hand transplant – the second one ever completed in the world – took place in 2016.

The digital sector also has a strong history in Leeds, with the UK’s first Internet provider, Freeserve, being established in the city.

Jennifer Young, head of ConferenceLeeds, commented: “Leeds is full of historic culture, oldests and firsts, and a lot of this is on offer for delegates to come and experience. The city’s heritage has paved the way for a number of strengths within Leeds today, including the digital, healthcare and manufacturing sectors. We feel it’s important that when organisers bring delegates to Leeds, they not only have a memorable conference in our excellent venues but that they can benefit from the inspirational culture and heritage that the city offers.

What’s even more exciting is that this culture is only set to continue to thrive and develop, with the recent reveal of the city’s dedication to its Leeds 2023 bid. There are many thrilling things to come including the collaboration of The Henry Moore Institute, The Hepworth Wakefield, Leeds Art Gallery and Yorkshire Sculpture Park to form the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle, and the launch of the Leeds Peoples Theatre, an outdoor community performance. We can’t wait to see our delegate experience develop and become even more varied over the next six years!”
