Seven hundred international animal health experts are expected to attend the five-day International Sheep Veterinary Congress (ISVC), which has been won by the Harrogate International Centre (HIC) for May 2017.

The lucrative ISVC takes place every four years and the last edition was in New Zealand. It is estimated to be worth £500,000 to the local economy as delegates book hotel rooms and spend money with local businesses.

“This is the culmination of more than two year’s hard work from the sales team here,” says Sales Manager at HIC, Paul Ashton. “It’s great for HIC but it’s also great for the local economy. The visitors from around the world will bring partners with them and maybe make a stay of it in the area.”

Ashton said he was able to secure the contract thanks to HIC’s links to nearby Leeds/Brard International Airport and the region’s strong associations with sheep farming and agriculture.

“This is great news for the district, especially considering the recent launch of Visit Harrogate which should make it all the simpler for international visitors to book and organise their stay here,” adds HIC Director, Simon Kent. “While it’s obviously not on the scale of next year’s Tour de France, this is still something that’s going to bring a significant number of international visitors to the region and will be a great boost for HIC and the wider economy.”
