Commercial property agent and surveyor SavoyStewart.co.uk recently surveyed 4,000 professionals from 20 different sectors on a range of aspects in order to determine which sector had the highest job satisfaction.

Participants were asked to rank their answers from 0 to 100 based on how strongly they agreed with the statement, with 0 indicating they did not agree at all, and 100 indicating they strongly agreed.

The questions were made up of positive and negative statements regarding topics including career prospects, mental health, positive impact on others and toxic culture. The higher the score for positive statements the greater the positive impact on work satisfaction, and the higher the negative score, the greater the negative impact on job satisfaction.

The average scores for responses to each question were found and then the sum of all the average scores for each industry was calculated to find the final score. The higher the score, the more satisfied people were (on average) in a given industry.

Childcare topped the list as the sector with the most satisfied professionals with 239 points overall. The sector scored 99 points for positive impact on others, and 86 points for satisfaction with employee empowerment.

Hospitality was revealed as the least satisfied job sector, scoring 83 points overall. With the lowest points for career prospects (42) of all sectors, in addition to negative points taken for mental health (-52) and personal remuneration (-75).

The Healthcare and Education sectors were the least satisfied when it comes to the mental health of employees, with -92 and –82 points respectively. When it came to toxic cultures, Marketing and Digital Media (-54) and Technology (-44) were the most unsatisfied sectors.

Lee Chambers, Psychologist and Wellbeing Consultant to SavoyStewart,co,uk, said of job satisfaction: “While our work is important, nothing is more important than our health and long-term happiness. For that reason, healthy boundaries are vital and reduce the impact that work has on other areas of your life. Starting to look for a positive work environment will fuel you by showing it’s possible to have a balanced life, and you are boosted by the fact you are taking action.

“When it comes to a toxic workplace, these are the tips I suggest to my clients: Stay focused on the important goals, and distance yourself from the gossip and blaming. By not participating, you are not adding your fuel to the fire.”
