Two major research and creative practices conferences are to come to Dundee.

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) and the Scottish Word and Image Group (SWIG), both based at the University of Dundee, will be host venues for international conferences in 2013 and 2014.

Hundreds of international delegates are expected to attend, with the DJCAD hosting the 8th biennial International Multidisciplinary Printmaking Conference (IMPACT 8), in September 2013 and SWIG hosing the 2014 Triennial Conference of the International Association for Word and Image Studies (IAWIS).

The most recent Impact conference attracted 450 delegates from 35 countries and organisers expect a similar turn out for the 2013 event. Impact 8 will cover a diverse range of print-related topics including historical print-making and new technology. Previous conferences have been held in Melbourne and Berlin.

The Triennial Conference of the International Association for Word and Image Studies, which has been held previously in Montreal, Amsterdam, Paris and Hamburg, is a bi-lingual conference delivered in English and French. It is expected to attract more than 300 international delegates.

Karen Tocher, Business Tourism Manager at Dundee and Angus Convention Bureau praised the work of local ambassadors in bringing the events to the area.

“Professor Elaine Shemilt and Dr Paul Harrison of DJCAD’s presentations to Impact 7 in Melbourne last year were instrumental to them bringing this conference and hundreds of world class professionals to Dundee,” said Tocher.

“Likewise, Dr Keith Williams’ presentation in Montreal was highly influential in securing Dundee as the IAWIS destination. “The importance of these events to the local economy cannot be underestimated. In 2010, conferences and events held in the area generated an economic impact of more than £50m, attracting over 240,000 delegates from the UK and around the world to Dundee and Angus.”
