Edinburgh-based event services company, Diamond Event Services, has signed up to the Government’s national Youth Contract Scheme. Four young people have been taken on by the firm in the last three months.
The £1bn scheme, which aims to help young people get into work, was launched in April 2012 and offers a range of incentives to both employers and young people to take part. The aim of the scheme is to provide nearly half a million new opportunities for 18-24 year olds, including apprenticeships and voluntary work experience placements.
“The scheme is a great fit for Diamond Event Services,” says MD John Diamond. “We are committed to making sure that the people entering the industry have the right skills and attitude and this allows us to work with motivated young men and women from the word go, helping them to achieve their potential within our exciting industry.”
Diamond has found that the new staff it has taken on under the scheme have been committed to developing their skills. Highlighting this positive approach is the recent achievement of Grant Blyth, who joined under the Youth Contract Scheme and has since successfully completed the National Access and Rescue Centre’s Height Safety training course.
In related news, Diamond Event Services has announced its autumn schedule of Safety Passport for Live Events training days. The courses are designed for people working in the events industry and will provide comprehensive training on a wide range of health and safety issues.
Upon successful completion of the course’s day-long session, participants are issued with a Safety Passport. This is a credit-card sized plastic ID card. It proves the bearer’s knowledge of health and safety issues and gives access to ‘passport controlled’ workplaces and projects.
The training courses are modular and cover topics such as ‘Organising for Safety’, ‘The Workplace’, ‘Tools, Plant and Machinery’, ‘Procedures’ and ‘The Environment’.
