Detroit positioning itself for outbound UK and Ireland MICE market

With new hotel openings, dedicated conference centres and direct routes from the UK with Delta (including a new Icelandair route in 2023) – Detroit, USA, is emerging as an increasingly attractive destination for business needs. DMO Visit Detroit has announced it is increasing its targeting of the business travel community in both UK and Ireland with the appointment of a new PR team in the two countries, Cellet Marketing and PR.

The US city has over 5,000 hotel rooms downtown and Detroit’s major Convention Centre, Huntington Place is the 16th largest in the USA, with 2.4m sq.ft divided between five exhibition halls, 80 meeting rooms and eight banqueting rooms many with spectacular river views.

The city is served with two daily direct flights from London to Detroit via Delta, and Icelandair offers the option of a stop-over for up to seven days without penalty in Reykjavik from London, Manchester, and Glasgow.

Suburban Collection Showplace is Metro Detroit’s is another venue option and has an adjoining Hyatt Place hotel offering 126 rooms. The Showplace has nearly 100,000 sq. ft of meeting spaces and over 300,000 sq.ft of multipurpose exhibition floor/flexible event spaces.

Pre and post-tours of unique experiences on offer in Detroit can include The Motown Museum Hitsville USA, Detroit Institute of Arts, the Ford Rouge Factory Tour and the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation.

Andrea Cadotto, associate director of meetings and conventions at Visit Detroit commented: “Detroit has so much to offer the business traveller; it’s a city that is constantly evolving.”

Jordan McCluskey has been brought on board by Cellet, and will be responsible for Visit Detroit’s Business Travel/Conference strategy in the UK and Ireland. He will work closely with business travel planners, MICE coordinators, and airline partners.
