Highpoint conference centre in Leicester has been put on the market with Savills by its owners Asra Housing Group. The agent’s deadline for a tender sale is 31 July.

The group has been seeking a buyer or a new leaseholder since the last tenant, the TREES social enterprise put its Highpoint Events subsidiary into liquidation last autumn, with the loss of 14 jobs.

Roger Sketcher, Property Services Manager for Asra Housing Group, according to a report in the Leicester Mercury newspaper, said if no buyer could be found the 2.85 acre site could be turned into residential units, subject to planning.

Highpoint was created as a conference and training centre a decade ago after the former St Catherine’s convent and chapel were converted in a £5m project by Leicester Housing Association, subsequently renamed Asra Housing Group.

The centre has a 130-seat conference theatre and 29 bedrooms.

Savills Director Victor Ktori says there had been interest in the property from business people wanting to operate it as a conference centre and others interested in residential, or mixed use or banqueting.

CN reported, 24 July, that the new University of Leicester conference venue, College Court, had secured £1m in potential business, with 100 reservations ahead of its opening in October 2013. The Grade II listed buildings, located near Queen’s Road, had been out of use for seven years. A £14m investment has put events at the centre of the business plan.
