A trio of contractors have been announced for Conference Aston’s £5.4m refurbishment project at what is Birmingham’s biggest residential conference venue.

Conference Aston, located on the campus of Aston University, has hired Wakefield-based PDS Design & Build, construction company Speller Metcalfe and office refurbishment specialists Overbury, following a tender process.

All three contractors will be working to complete the refurbishment by November, with the contractors already onsite and work underway.

As part of the development, Conference Aston will be constructing new meeting suites, expanding its restaurant, kitchen, lounge, and bar areas, as well as refurbishing 52 bedrooms.

Lucy Talbot, Director at Conference Aston, said: “Given the level of investment we are making, it is essential that the finished result is superlative. We have selected three extremely competent contractors with individual specialities who showed passion and flair when bidding for the work.

“PDS is obsessive about the quality of its finishes, which will help transform the remainder of our bedrooms into four-star hotel standard. Speller Metcalfe’s team has already shown themselves to be flexible to changes in the project timeline, which is essential given the tight completion date we have. Overbury’s pitch showed great design flair, with a creative use of colour and an impressive set of client testimonials.

“We are a national and international venue and, as well as providing the facilities you would expect, we must wow from the word go. This ambitious programme of refurbishment will ensure our offering remains world-class.”

Tony Shaw, MD Speller Metcalfe Malvern, said: “As a client, the university is really placing an emphasis on bringing its facilities up-to-date and the refurbishment of the conference centre facilities is a testament to this.”
