A major fire has destroyed a seont hotel, conference centre and spa in Cornwall, weeks before the town is visited by the Olympic torch relay.

The 120-bedroom Best Western Falmouth Beach Hotel at Gyllyngvase was one of the biggest in the town and was opened in 1984.

A spokesman for Best Western told CN on Monday (30 April) afternoon: “We can confirm that one of our member properties, the Best Western Falmouth Beach Hotel in Falmouth, is currently on fire.  All guests have been evacuated and the emergency services are battling to get the blaze under control.

“We are currently trying to speak with the owner of the property to find out further information.”

According to a report on the BBC the fire started on the third floor of the four-storey property, but spread throughout and the roof had collapsed. The Mayor of Falmouth, Geoffrey Evans, told the news site the fire was a “complete disaster”.

“It’s right at the start of the holiday season, we’ve got the Olympic Torch coming in a few weeks, and the Finn Cup (sailing competition) as well, so I don’t know how this is going to affect accommodation,” he said.

“I think the hotel was fully booked, so to lose such a prominent hotel at this time of the year is a complete disaster.”
