The Birmingham Repertory Theatre (The REP) has partnered with the city’s Symphony Hall and ICC Birmingham to stage the live production of The Snowman with the REP being closed for refurbishment until 2013.
The
festive play was created by The REP has since has been seen by over one
million people worldwide. The Snowman returns to Birmingham for a
special visit.
With The REP closed until 2013 while it undergoes
refurbishment and an extension to link with the new Library of
Birmingham, the Company remains dedicated to producing shows in and
around the city.
Keen to use the Hall 1 space over the Christmas
period, the ICC together with Symphony Hall, approached The REP, who
were eager to bring The Snowman back for the festive season. A joint
venture was agreed upon, with the ICC providing technical staff, the
Symphony Hall providing front of house and event management staff and
the REP delivering technical staff and the artistic programme.
“We
required a large, traditional theatre-style venue with the technical
facilities to accommodate the complexity of The Snowman, including the
flying sequences that audiences have grown to know and love,” says
Executive Director for The REP, Stuart Rogers. “The ICC provided the
perfect venue; with a 1,400-seat theatre and, of course, the expertise
to put on a spectacular show.”
The Snowman arrived at the ICC on
16 December. The show has come from a sold-out week of permances in
Tampere, Finland; transported by three articulated lorries including the
set, lighting, sound and flying equipment, 60 costumes and 265
individual props. The production will be brought to life by 22 dancers
and musicians and it will take 52 members of the technical and
production crew 45 hours to get it up and running.
