Birmingham ICC and West Midlands Police’s security operation began yesterday (2 October) for the Conservative Party Conference.

The security operation, which will see the ICC becoming an enclosed site along with the adjoining Hyatt Regency Hotel, involves detailed searches of the building before the conference starts.

“We work closely with West Midlands Police to secure the venue,” says Security Manager at the ICC, Richard Cocannon. “Months of planning and teamwork culminate in the search and lock-down operation. When we see the sniffer dogs running around the building we know its all systems go for the conference.”

Over 13,500 delegates are expected to attend the conference along with 1,400 national and international media. The conference is expected to generate £16.5m for the local economy, and is seen as a key city-wide event, with the ICC team working closely with Marketing Birmingham, West Midlands Police and Birmingham City Council.
