Birmingham in the West Midlands has been awarded the title of ‘World Craft City’ by the World Craft Council, becoming one of eight cities in Europe to hold this title for its excellence in craftsmanship.

The World Craft City title is granted by the World Crafts Council, a UNESCO-linked organisation.

The announcement was made on 3 June 2025, following a rigorous assessment process that included a visit from an international judging panel in April 2025.

At the heart of Birmingham’s craft credentials is its historic Jewellery Quarter which is home to more than 800 businesses, including 100 specialist jewellers and retailers.

The new designation paves the way for international partnerships and collaborative projects, benefiting not only the Jewellery Quarter but also the wider West Midlands region, according to the Birmingham City Council.

The title is awarded to places with a rich craft heritage, a thriving maker scene, and a clear focus on preserving and advancing craft into the future. It is independently verified and peer-reviewed, making it a meaningful and credible marker of quality.

The recognition is expected to boost tourism, support local businesses, and raise Birmingham’s profile on the global stage.

Cllr Saima Suleman, Birmingham City Council cabinet member for digital, culture, heritage and tourism, said that the Jewellery Quarter has long been celebrated for its craftsmanship and innovation, and this designation recognises the area’s heritage and enduring excellence.
