Birmingham beats rivals to pull in record visitors

England’s second city is claiming a the highest vistor numbers outside London.

According to new figures revealed by Marketing Birmingham’s research arm, the Regional Observatory, and tourism research body Global Tourism Solutions, Birmingham attracted 37.2million visitors last year, an increase of almost 10%.

Marketing Birmingham claims this is more than any other regional UK city that have reported their visitor results.

It says that the city’s visitor economy is now worth £5.98 billion, having grown by half a billion in just one year.

A spokeswoman said: “This growth has resulted in the creation of nearly 5,000 local jobs and further boosted Birmingham’s drive to become a leading global tourism and business destination.”

The figures were released as Resorts World Birmingham opened for business.

Europe’s first resort destination features retailers including a Next Outlet, Nike Factory Store and GAP, 18 bars and restaurants and the Genting International Casino.
The four-star Genting Hotel offers a spa that includes a wide range of innovative treatments, a pool, outside hot tub and salt cave. It will open next month.
Meanwhile, the BBC Music Awards 2015 will take place at The Genting Arena, Birmingham, on 10 December.

The Marketing Birmingham Regional Observatory claims the event is worth £2.46 million to the region.
