Barcelona Convention Bureau’s former Director Airy Garrigosa has picked up the 2012 JMIC Unity Award.

Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) President Philippe Fournier presented the award at the IMEX Awards Banquet in Frankfurt, 23 May.

“Airy is an individual that has for many years represented the kinds of qualities and activities that support industry growth and professionalism”.

Garrigosa spent the first 12 years of her career in the hotel industry and moved into the meetings sector with an appointment to start up what was at the time was the first convention bureau in Spain. She managed the BCB since its creation in 1983.

Garrigosa has also served in many different industry associations, including ICCA, ECM, MPI and SITE.

The number of professional meetings held in Barcelona in 2011 rose 6.8 per cent on the previous year. The city hosted 2,283 meetings and 647,693 participants. Eighty per cent of these delegates were from abroad.

The BCB appointed German Christoph Tessmar to head the bureau in March.
