I have been a Toastmaster and a member of
The National Association of Toastmasters for many years culminating in
being elected President by my peers in 1994. For those of you who may
not have worked with a Toastmaster or discovered what they can bring to
an event, these questions and answers may be of use.
Q: What is a Toastmaster?
A:
Just as an event organiser needs to interpret a client’s wishes, a toastmaster has to work with the event manager by being a stage manager,
a coordinator, a people mover and an interpreter of the organiser’s
wishes. This is achieved by using the skills learned from fronting
up many and various occasions such as Award ceremonies, private parties,
corporate events etc. This is achieved by becoming the catalyst between
all the contributing parties.
Q: What do you bring to an event?
A:
I add a touch of formality and tradition to the proceedings, especially
useful if dealing with Royal, Civic, Diplomatic, Political and
overseas clients. I meet, greet and announce dinner. I can introduce
speakers, bands or cabaret artistes and organise raffles or auctions.
Q: Why should I employ one?
A:
Once I have been briefed you can rely on me to carry out your wishes to
make sure the event runs smoothly to a successful conclusion.
Q: Do you have to wear uniform?
A: No, I can wear anything within reason but the red jacket denotes authority.
Q: What do you charge?
A:
This will depend on where the function is held, how many planning
meetings I have to attend and the length of time the function will take.
