When
it comes to Wi-Fi for events there is still some misunderstanding about
the reality of what is required of Wi-Fi today, the cost implications
and the differences between domestic Wi-Fi and event Wi-Fi. Because W-Fi
works at the touch of a button at home most venues and organisers have
come to expect the same of event Wi-Fi. However it’s a completely
different and as such is much more complex to deliver.
Venues
with fast, reliable and secure wireless access are highly sort after by
event organisers as the demand for Wi-Fi in the industry continues to
grow, with more people using Wi-Fi dependent apps, registration systems
and navigation tools on top of the increase in hybrid events.
A
number of venues have taken the leap, working with specialist
contractors, to overhaul their systems and bring them up to date. When
Max Wi-Fi has been brought in to consult and deliver the proper wireless
infrastructure some venues have been surprised at the level of
investment needed for successful implementation; most likely because
it’s been expected to match up to the monthly cost of a broadband
connection at home. Venues need to be aware that the process of
delivering a robust communications infrastructure involves using
enterprise grade equipment, highly trained staff and costly equipment
that needs regular updating. In order to deliver this successfully a
decent budget is required.
Relying on a broadband connection
just doesn’t cut it for events and as we’ve become conditioned to expect
high speed and reliable connectivity wherever we go it’s disappointing
when this isn’t delivered, especially at an event. I’ve heard sighs,
tuts and grunts from frustrated guests balancing their devices in the
air because they can’t use apps, access their email or surf the
internet. It certainly takes away from the overall positive event
experience.
Venues need to be realistic about the investment
needed for event Wi-Fi and take the leap, because it’s worth it. The
increase in demand for event Wi-Fi isn’t going to dwindle. Equally event
professionals need to be in the know when it comes to organising events
that require the use of Wi-Fi and confident that guests will be able to
use their devices successfully.
