The Tour de France’s visit to Yorkshire was billed the “grandest” opening to the race in its history, by race director Christian Prudhomme. He estimated five million people turned out in person to watch the spectacle over the weekend.

Speaking after Stage Two finished in Sheffield, he said the huge crowds seen for the second day out on the route were “unbelievable, incredible, amazing, astonishing”.
