The former Potarch Hotel in Ballogie, Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire is to be transformed into a 40-bedroom hotel, spa, conference and events centre with £7m being invested.

Subject to planning permission, work will start on the Ballogie Hotel & Spa mid next year, with a projected opening in autumn 2015.

It is expected that at peak times up to 40 jobs will be created in the hotel, spa and conference and events centre.

The events venue will be capable of hosting 200 delegates for receptions or 150 for weddings, conferences and other events. In Aberdeenshire, over 1,220 people get married each year, equating to 60 weddings in Royal Deeside alone.

Randall Nicol, Partner in Ballogie Estate Enterprises which is undertaking the development, says: “We looked at a number of options for developing the hotel and surrounding area. We are passionate about Ballogie and this part of Scotland and we want the new hotel to be a principal attraction for people in the north east, as well as providing a unique destination experience which will attract more visitors to Royal Deeside.

“Having commissioned two in-depth economic appraisals and held a public consultation to get local feedback, we decided the best option was to invest in the hotel to bring it up to a four-star standard, plus build a new conference and events centre, and a spa and leisure complex.”

The Chair of Discover Royal Deeside and Cairngorms, Claire Bruce, adds: “This development is good news for Royal Deeside. There’ll be more jobs all year round and it will be heartening to have additional visitors to the area who can enjoy all the attractions and activities that we have on offer.”

Ballogie Estate Enterprises is a family run rural enterprise established in 1850.
