The Wellcome Trust Conference Centre in Hinxton, Cambridge will start work on its new £9.7m project, the Kitchen Garden Enclosure, in January 2014. The project includes a new exhibition centre, meeting rooms and bar.

The trust hopes the Kitchen Garden Enclosure project will improve the international reputation of the conference centre as a site for scientific advancement and celebrates communication, collaboration, achievement and creativity of the Genome Campus.

“This is a tremendous occasion at the conference centre,” says Sales and Marketing Manager, Linda Prior. “Not only will this place us at the forefront of the scientific conferences sector, but it will also better integrate us into the wider vision of the Genome Campus.”

The new building will see the current cloisters and grassed areas open up and enclosed under a glass roof to create a multi-use space for events.

By opening up the area surrounding the Auditorium, the conference centre will create space sufficient to support exhibitions both fixed and temporary, poster sessions, catering and a relaxation area for delegates and speakers.

The Wellcome Trust Conference Centre has already seen its restaurant capacity increase from 180 to 300 this year and is weeks away from opening a new suite of 64 bedrooms.

The project is due to be completed by December 2014.
