The Brighton Centre’s General Manager Howard Barden has been appointed Head of Tourism and Venues at Brighton and Hove City Council. Barden will combine this new role with his current position as GM of the Brighton Centre.

Barden, who succeeds Adam Bates who is leaving the authority at the end of the year, will now be responsible for a service that combines the city’s official leisure and tourism unit and Convention Bureau, Visit Brighton, the Brighton Centre and Hove Centre.

Barden has over 25 years’ experience in tourism and venues and has been at the Brighton Centre since 1994, taking on the role of GM in 2011. He has been instrumental in bringing high profile events to the Centre, including the Labour Party’s Annual Conference 2013, and has overseen a transformation of the venue, including a multi-million pound refresh of the interior event spaces and improved standards of customer service.

“I feel fortunate to be able to work for a city I’m truly passionate about,” he says. “As a destination, Brighton has so much going for it; it’s an easy sell for me. I’m looking forward to strengthening collaboration within the city and cementing our position as a serious contender on the conference and events business map.”
