Sporting venues operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV) including the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield (EIS Sheffield) and Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, have been selected to stage the Westfield British Transplant Games.

Sheffield’s sporting venues will play host to almost 20 sporting competitions during the four-day event, which takes place 15-18 August 2013.

Hundreds of transplant athletes will compete in archery, obstacle courses, sports hall athletics, table tennis, sport stacking and volleyball at EIS Sheffield. Ponds Forge’s Olympic-sized 50m pool will stage the children’s and adult swimming events. The venue will also stage badminton and the final Gala Dinner.

Golfers will compete at SIV’s Tinsley Park Golf Course and at Don Valley Bowl athletes will take part in children’s ball throwing and five-a-side football.

Track and field, the mini marathon and The Star Donor Run will take place at SIV’s Don Valley Stadium.

“We’re extremely proud to be involved in such a unique and inspiring event and hope the hundreds of transplant athletes have a fantastic time competing in our facilities,” says Operations Director at SIV, Lorenzo Clark. “Last time the British Transplant Games were held in the city five years ago it attracted about 2,000 competitors and visitors. We hope, once again, we can play a part in raising awareness of the value of organ donation and help increase numbers on the NHS Organ Donor Register.”

Organised on behalf of the charity Transplant Sport, the Games showcase the benefits of transplantation, while giving people aged between two and 80-years-old who have had a transplant the chance to compete in sport activities.
