Sports Personality of the Year to be held at Olympic venue Excel

East London exhibition and convention centre, Excel London, has won the right to host the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year event.

Personality of the Year is the pinnacle of the sporting calendar and
will be broadcast live from Excel on 16 December 2012.
 
During
the London 2012 Olympic Games Excel London was an Olympic venue for
sports such as Weightlifting, Judo and Table Tennis and welcomed 1.5m
visitors during the Games, with its busiest day attracting 70,000
visitors.
 
“It is a huge honour to have been chosen as the venue
for Sports Personality of the Year and we are delighted to be hosting
this event at Excel,” says Director of Conferences and Events, at Excel
London, James Rees. “In what has been an amazing year for sport, we
look forward to welcoming so many champions, many of whom found Olympic
and Paralympic glory at Excel over the summer.”
 
Previously the event has been held in Sheffield, Liverpool and Birmingham, among others.
