Edinburgh is Europe’s second most expensive destination in terms of the cost of staying in the city, according to a new survey from CheapHotels.org.

CheapHotels.org compared hotel rates for 30 main destinations in Europe for a period spanning three months, June – August 2012.

To stay overnight in the Scottish capital this summer travellers had to pay, on average, £87 per night. This rate was for the cheapest available hotel room at a hotel rated with a minimum of two stars.

The Swedish capital Stockholm was slightly more expensive at an average of £89 per night. Italy’s Venice completed the top three, where the average price during the same period was £83 per night.

CheapHotels.org says the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, one of the largest art festivals in the world, was a factor in the city’s high hotel rates.

“During the Festival Fringe, travellers are hard-pressed to find a room below £150 per night,” says Barbara Adams from CheapHotels.org. “Considering the month of August only, Edinburgh is the most expensive destination in Europe, and the festival certainly played a role in that.”

The following table shows the 10 most expensive destinations in Europe based on each city’s average rate for the cheapest available double room (minimum two-star hotel) during the summer time period of June – August 2012:

1 – Stockholm (£89)
2 – Edinburgh (£87)
3 – Venice (£83)
4 – Zurich (£81)
5 – Oslo (£76)
6 – Copenhagen (£75)
7 – London (£73)
8 – Nice (£63)
9 – Paris (£59)
10 – Dublin (£57)
