The new Emirates Air Line connecting Excel London with The O2 has notched up its first million passengers.
The £50m cable car, which opened on 28 June and covers a 1.1km stretch across the Thames, is able to carry up to 2,500 passengers per hour in each direction. Transport for London said more than 20,000 passengers have used the service on average since the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games on 27 July.
The Emirates Air Line opening hours have been extended until 11.30pm during the Olympic and Paralympic Games but the service will operate from 7am to 9pm on weekdays.
“In just a couple of months since it opened, the Emirates Air Line has well and truly landed in east London,” Mayor of London Boris Johnson said. “Not only has this iconic new transport link opened up access to the Royal Docks Enterprise Zone, but its stunning panoramic views as it soars across our city skyline have proved a star attraction.
“This is just the beginning, because as we head beyond the 2012 Games, London’s first urban cable car remains at the epicentre of my plans to rejuvenate the East End.”
