The Peak District has launched a £600,000 marketing campaign to grow tourism in the area.
Visit Peak District and Derbyshire, the area’s tourism bureau, received a share in a £19.8m pot of money from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund, which made the ‘Growing Tourism Locally’ project possible.
The cash will be spent over the next three financial years, including 2012-13, and will include match funding from private sector partners and other tourist board investment to ensure that the best possible value is achieved throughout the campaign.
VisitEngland estimates that, nationally, the ‘Growing Tourism Locally’ project will generate £365m in additional tourism spend and create around 9,100 jobs.
David Thornton, Head of Marketing and Deputy Chief Executive at the tourist board, said: “We’ve been working hard over the past seven years to establish the area as a world class destination through imaginative and far-reaching marketing initiatives, and this valuable boost will help to ensure that our work can continue.”
James Berresford, VisitEngland’s Chief Executive, said: “The RGF money is a huge boost for tourism in England. The project enables our public and private sector partners to work together to stimulate tourism and ultimately grow jobs throughout the country, with particular emphasis on some local areas.
“This is a great time to launch, and we hope that by riding on the crest of a wave of a successful London 2012 Olympic Games we will harness the swell of national pride and inspire Brits to take the home advantage and holiday at home this year and beyond.”
