Wembley Stadium will host the Olympic football during the 2012 Games and has targeted post Olympic growth in its conference and events sector.
At an Olympic Media Open Day to showcase the venue, Head of Sales, Conference and Banqueting at Wembley Stadium, Jackie Boughton told CN: “We hope that hosting an Olympic event at Wembley stadium will contribute to a further growth in our conference and events sector.
“We have the honour of being part of a group of venues hosting the world’s biggest sporting event, however we are aware that our next challenge is to maintain interest in the venue and negotiate a potential post Olympic slump.
“We are platinum partners with London & Partners and we will be looking to maintain our exposure through this partnership and our participation in future trade shows, such as EIBTM,” she adds.
Boughton was keen to point out that although Wembley Stadium will be closed for events during the Olympic period, the stadium will still be open to take bookings for future events.
“We want to get the message out that although we are closed in terms of running business during the Games, organisers can still make bookings for the venue during this period.”
Last year Wembley won the Best Meetings and Conference Venue award at the Business Destination Travel Awards and its long-term aim after the Olympics is to address European cities in a bid to attract more international conferences and conventions to London, and Wembley Stadium.
During the media day guests were taken on a guided tour of the stadium including a visit to the home dressing room complete with Team GB football shirts, access to the pitch side area and a walk up the 107 steps to the Royal box.
