Is technology taking away
the human interaction element of business? It frustrates me that more people
are using a variety of ways of communicating that don’t involve talking or
physically interacting. Email, texting, social media – they all have their
place in the modern world, but cannot replace the benefits of human
interaction.
I have worked in the
events industry for over 25 years and appreciate how critical business
relationships are. This simply cannot be created over an email. The main
objective of most meetings, conferences and events is to bring people together,
break down barrier and improve communication.
So why aren’t we practising
what we preach? I believe it is for a number of reasons. If you have grown up
with, or spent a long time relying on this approach, maybe you haven’t
experienced (or have forgotten) the benefits of technology-free communication.
For others, a virtual world can provide a wall to hide behind, a perceived
easier option.
Once we pick up the phone,
or meet face to face, both parties will realise that the other is only human. I
don’t just know which hotels clients prefer, I know their dog’s name and how
old their children are. I found this out by listening to them talk.
Technology shouldn’t
interfere with or replace human contact. Like the little black dress – talking
will never go out of fashion.
