Trip Advisor has named London as No.1 destination in the UK in its latest Traveller’s Choice listing.

London, as reported by CN last week, has also jumped to seventh in the league table of top convention destinations, the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) city rankings for 2011.

In 2009 Mayor Boris Johnson had described London’s permance in this important sector of the economy unacceptable, saying “London doesn’t do 19th” and ordered a review of business tourism.

In 2011 the capital played host to 115 conferences and conventions, which moved the city from 14th to seventh place in the latest ICCA rankings.

In the latest Trip Advisor resort rankings Edinburgh was named second, Liverpool third and Torquay fourth.

Trip Advisor says of London and its special events appeal this summer: “Will it be crowded? Sure. But it’ll be unforgettable.”

The Trip Advisor report praises the English Riviera resort of Torquay for its “distinctively Mediterranean feel” and places it above Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester, Blackpool, Birmingham and Llandudno, which occupy places five to 10 respectively.

The English Riviera Tourism Company’s Chief Executive Carolyn Custerson said:

“I am delighted that Torquay on the English Riviera has been recognised as one of the top destinations in the country.

“Customer reviews are now a very powerful marketing tool and influence customers’ decisions to purchase”.

Charterhouse Hotel in Torquay recently won Trip Advisor’s Top UK Hotel Award and its Best UK Service Award.

Nicky Harding, Conference Torquay Manager, Conference Torquay said:

“This is brilliant news for us, and can really help boost our own marketing effort in winning conferences to Torquay. Having a top accolade of this nature behind us obviously raises the profile of Torquay and will give us the edge as a serious contender in the UK wide conference market”.
