Westminster School has purchased the Lawrence Hall from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

Head Master Dr M S Spurr said: “I am delighted that the Governing Body has agreed to buy a 999-year lease for the Lawrence Hall from the Royal Horticultural Society. The Hall is very close to our playing fields at Vincent Square and it will be converted to a sports centre for Westminster School and Westminster Under School. It is very much hoped that the centre will open next Play term.”

The sale of the Lawrence Hall raised £18m for the RHS to invest in horticulture, although a statement from the RHS statement said: “Westminster School will continue to protect the heritage of the Lawrence Hall and Conference Centre and the agreement allows the RHS to continue to use the facilities to run its four London Flower Shows.”

The Society will also embark on a major fundraising campaign to raise a further £9m. The combined investment fund of £27m will allow the charity, over the next five years, to make significant changes.

Sue Biggs, RHS Director General, said: “Our plans will help transform communities, add much needed scientific knowledge and safeguard horticulture for the benefit of future generations and the environment.”

The RHS says it also has plans to redevelop the Lindley Hall and Library to create a new space for a larger, open plan library and exhibition gallery.
