What happens when you swap business cards for running shoes? Conference News catches up with Jess Sariak, NOWIE (Network of Women in Events) Run Club producer, to talk about the launch of Stride & Social and her journey into NOWIE.
What is Stride & Social?
Stride & Social is a networking event by the Network of Women in Events (NOWIE), offering a fresh, movement-focused alternative to traditional networking. Taking place on Saturday, 26 April 2025, at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, it invites women across the events industry to step away from formal settings and connect through either an energising 5K run or a relaxed 2–3K walk—prioritising well-being, inclusivity, and genuine conversation.
The journey behind Stride & Social

Jess Sariak, NOWIE Run Club producer says that the inspiration for Stride & Social came from her own journey. “You don’t have to be the best at something to recognise its value. Over the years, I’ve experienced firsthand how staying active benefits me both personally and professionally.”
Journey with NOWIE

On her journey with NOWIE, Sariak says: “As 2025 approached, I wanted to become more involved with NOWIE and give back to the community that helped me get my first break – something that can be incredibly challenging in today’s industry. I applied to be a NOWIE mentee, was accepted, and was matched with my mentor, Emma Rainbow from Show Block, an Arena Group company. From our very first session, we set the tone for the year: 2025 would be about getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. This mindset pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, and for the first time, I felt truly unstoppable.”
Bringing Stride & Social to life
The conception of Stride & Social began with a simple conversation with Cat Kevern, NOWIE’s director. She says: “We talked about her own running journey and the benefits it had brought her. We bounced ideas back and forth, realising that this could be the perfect opportunity to merge two concepts: the inclusive atmosphere of NOWIE networking with my personal aspiration of creating a “run” club without the pressure, judgement, or expectations often associated with traditional running groups.”
Why is this type of event so important to the event industry and to women in the industry?
Sariak says that events like Stride & Social are crucial. She says: “The event industry needs to shift away from traditional networking norms and embrace new, more inclusive trends. If there’s one thing most (if not all) networking events have in common, it’s alcohol—and that’s problematic.”
“That’s why Stride & Social was created—to offer an alcohol-free, movement-based alternative that prioritises well-being, inclusivity, and authentic connections. It’s a shift the events industry needs—one that fosters community, supports personal and professional growth, and ensures everyone feels welcome.”
What the Buzz says about our industry
“The interest in Stride & Social shows a real shift in how we connect,” says Sariak. “People are prioritising work-life balance. They want to be outdoors, live healthier, and network in a way that feels natural—without the pressure or late nights.” The events industry is evolving, and professionals are clearly ready for more mindful, meaningful ways to engage.
On the big survey

Sariak says that one of the most significant findings from the big survey was the overwhelming demand for more networking opportunities. She says: “Women in the industry are seeking inclusive, accessible spaces to connect, learn, and grow professionally. This reinforces the importance of initiatives like Stride & Social, which offer an alternative to traditional networking by prioritising well-being, inclusivity, and genuine connections.”
“Beyond networking, our findings highlight the ongoing need for stronger professional development resources, better job opportunities, and improved workplace standards for women across the UK events sector. At NOWIE, we are committed to using this data to drive change—advocating for a more equitable, supportive, and progressive industry where all women can thrive.”
