Confidence in the UK business meetings and events sector remains high, with 61% of businesses forecasting higher revenue in 2025, according to the latest Meetings Industry Association (MIA) Insights report.
On average, 41% of forecasted revenue for 2025 is already confirmed, according to the 140 venues, suppliers, agents and destinations surveyed.
While this marks a 10% drop from last year, the industry is optimistic that a steady flow of enquiries will support overall growth. This includes international events, which account for 12% of projected revenue.
Recruitment and retention remain key challenges
Along with revenue forecasts, the report highlights an ongoing issue – staffing difficulties:
- 48% of businesses found recruitment “somewhat challenging” in the past year, with 18% reporting significant difficulties.
- Increased competition for candidates, a lack of recruitment resources and high turnover were cited as major barriers.
- In response, 53% of organisations have introduced work-life balance initiatives, while 38% have enhanced pay and benefits to improve retention.
Contract disputes and instant booking trends
Other findings include:
- One-third (33%) of venues now offer Instant Book options for event organisers.
- One-quarter (25%) of respondents experienced significant contract disputes in the past year.
- 62% identified cancellation policies as a key challenge in contract negotiations.
Industry outlook
MIA chief executive Shonali Devereaux (pictured) said that securing new business and retaining talent will be critical for growth.
“Our latest findings highlight a sector that is optimistic about the year ahead, but recruitment and retention remain pressing concerns,” she said. “We will continue to provide practical resources and industry support to help businesses navigate these challenges.”
