The Belfry Hotel & Resort in the West Midlands has achieved EarthCheck Bronze status, demonstrating its commitment to leading the industry on climate action and providing sustainable travel experiences for guests.

Judges for the certification which showcases a business’ dedication to its sustainability pathway highlighted The Belfry’s commitment to preserving and enhancing its natural surroundings, cultural heritage, local community and economy.

The Belfry has introduced initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, including installing new kitchen equipment that filters and reuses cooking oil, saving 480 litres per month; implementing a new waste management system that has separated 18.32 tonnes of dry mixed recycling since July; and fitting waterless urinals, saving an estimated 900,000 litres of water annually.

Wider ESG (environmental, social and governance) measures also include raising over £20,000 last year for the Teenage Cancer Trust, Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association and Hospitality Action, showcasing careers in hospitality to 120 children at the Springboard Takeover Day, and donating more than 10 bags of unclaimed lost property to charity every month.

Anna Hawkins, sustainability lead at The Belfry Hotel & Resort, said: “As our EarthCheck accreditation shows, we’re delighted that the steps we’ve taken so far are making a real and tangible difference to both people and planet. But, of course, the work doesn’t stop here – we can’t wait to elevate our efforts even further this year and work towards achieving EarthCheck Silver Certification.”

In 2025, The Belfry is planning to increase its number of electric vehicle chargers, install solar panels, and complete work on a new waste2water treatment plant.

This is as well as aiming to achieve a BREEAM Excellence Rating in the building of its flagship events space and its new Leisure Club. All funds raised from the resort’s first-ever Belfry Classic Golf Day, in May, will also go towards supporting the MND Association and Hospitality Action.
